The Orioles got their sixth walk-off win and reached the season’s midpoint at 37-44. This is an excellent improvement from last year, which was 27-54 at the halfway point. They are 23-20 following a 14-24 start.
Orioles rookie Adley Rutschman began the day in an 0-for-18 skid, tied with Joe Barlow with a two-out RBI double in the ninth inning that hit the right-field wall. Meanwhile, the team’s second baseman, Rougned Odor, led off the 10th inning with a bunt single off Matt Moore, moving Austin Hays to third base. The Rangers intentionally walked Ramon Urias to create a bases-loaded force situation. Orioles manager Brandon Hyde noticed the teamwork that was at play between his team’s players.
“Total team play,” Hyde said. “Great bunt. Makes the pitcher come off the mound. Tough play for him. That was huge.”
Bryan Baker struck out two in a hitless 10th innings for the Orioles, who managed to win despite going 2 for 12 with runners in scoring position. Meanwhile, starter Dean Kremer allowed five runs and eight hits with four strikeouts and two walks over 4 2/3 innings, his shortest outing since his debut.
“Huge props to the offense and the bullpen,” Kremer said. “They picked me up big time. To come back like that, pretty good.”
The Rangers (37-41) took the lead in the ninth inning behind Marcus Semien’s 10th home run of the year, a solo shot that went way past the field. Pitcher Joe Barlow came with a chance to close the score gap, but an RBI double from Rutschman tied the score. Nevertheless, Rangers manager Chris Woodward commended his efforts while acknowledging it was a missed opportunity.
“Joe has been really good for us,” he said. “Obviously he’s been really good for us since last year. He just made a pitch that left for middle of the plate. If he gets it away, where he wanted, Rutschman probably doesn’t hit a double on it.”
The Rangers had a 5-2 lead due to a five-run fifth inning with a three-run homer from Mitch Garver. However, Orioles centerfielder Mullins quickly cleared the bottom of the inning with a solo home run. In the next inning, the Orioles scored two runs from Jonathan Arauz, tying the score at 5.
“It was a bizarre game,” Woodward said. “And of course, it ended that way, as well.”
Rangers reliever Moore threw a fastball that hit the Orioles shortstop Jorge Mateo near the left knee, prompting Mateo to limp to first base and ending the game in 10 innings.
Mateo bent over painfully for around six seconds. As soon as he finished crossing the plate, Hays accompanied Mateo to first, with Cedric Mullins and Odor joining in.
“We are the kind of group where we are all together,” Odor said. “We are like a family. When you have a team like that, a lot of good things can happen. That’s why we’ve been having those comeback games.”
That did not stop Mateo from celebrating with his teammates after the win.
“He’s got tremendous mindset,” Orioles pitcher Jorge Lopez said. “To be that young, this is really impressive.”
