Week Three Thoughts
Yes, Buffalo played lights out on Monday night, but I can’t move Kansas City from the top spot. The Chiefs have been winning close, ugly games, but they are winning. The grumbling about the refs bailing Kansas City out late in games is getting louder every week, but I don’t suspect foul play. How many people used to complain that Tom Brady got every call? The hate comes with the territory of being the defending back to back champ, with the best head coach and best quarterback in the league.
Cincinnati has got to get it together. We know they are prone to start slow, but this team clearly isn’t right. Losing DJ Reader in free agency has negatively impacted the rushing defense, and coaching is still a question. Joe Burrow also doesn’t seem like his normal self. I still think this is a team that can rattle off several wins in a row and be a playoff caliber team, but an 0-4 start would be devastating.
Kudos to the Steelers being 3-0, but I can’t get on board with them as one of the better teams in the league. I love Justin Fields getting an actual shot with a good organization/coaching staff, but there’s still questions about who will be starting moving forward. Mike Tomlin won’t even commit to Fields despite the good start – Russell Wilson still lingers in the wings. What does that tell you?
San Francisco, Baltimore, and Dallas should all be ranked in the top ten, but they’ve been disappointments thus far. The 49ers are dealing with injuries to every one of their top offensive weapons except Brandon Aiyuk, but the offense isn’t even the problem – it’s the defense that’s been the issue. The Ravens should be 3-0, but they have had trouble holding leads late in games. Dallas has been Jekyll and Hyde – blow out win, followed by blowout loss, then three quarters of bad football until they woke up in the fourth quarter versus the Ravens.
We are going into week four, and the bad football continues. Hideous turnovers, dumb penalties, bad coaching calls, and overall poor play on the field are plaguing the NFL. Scoring has been down around the league compared to years past, and over two thirds of the games the past two weeks hit the under on total points scored. Mediocre offensive line play is definitely playing a big part, as are injuries to starting quarterbacks. I refuse to believe the idea that the cover two is the main reason why quarterbacks are struggling – as some media personalities have suggested. I’m sure the play on the field will improve as the season moves forward, but it’s been ugly on the field more so than not through three weeks.
